Wallace McCann was an art teacher with the NSW Education Department for nearly 40 years. He taught in several High Schools including Sydney Girls High School and completed his career at Cremorne High School. Wallace McCann retired in 1974.
During his life he produced many excellent water colours and craft work of all kinds, but his main interest lay with the famous paintings in European Galleries. He died in July 1994 and had never fulfilled his dream to travel overseas to see and study the works he loved so much. His family, in offering a Study Tour to an art teacher, supported a later colleague to do what he was unable to achieve himself, and helped other art teachers to travel and benefit by the overseas experience which would have meant so much to him.
Th Wallace McCann Award was a travelling scholarship for a full time secondary art teacher who was an individual member of Art Education Victoria Inc.
It provided enough funds, about $14,000, for a world trip to study the art works of selected galleries, attend a course or visit schools.
The recipient of the tenth and final Wallace McCann Award was Amanda Snell, from PLC.
