Freedom
18cm x 23cm. Ilford 400 ASA film.
When I shot this I was inspired by the design principle of contrast, so I chose my aperture carefully to create depth of field. Later, when I printed it, I was reminded of the freedom we have in Australia and the way we treat asylum seekers. I had recently read some things in the newspaper. This contrast doesn't create such a beautiful image, but makes me think how fences divide things, even people. The sharp, jagged wire isn't very friendly and we use it to keep people out. The sharp, jagged wire isn't very friendly and we use it to keep people out, how un-Australian is that? My image creates tension but is still beautiful to look at.
